To achieve success every time, preparation is the key. First ensure the grate is clear of ash and waste. Place a thin layer of fuel in the grate. Add one or two firelighters and in the case of Homefire, sufficient kindling material. Build a few pieces of fuel around the firelighters. Light the fire ensuring that the boiler damper, if fitted, is closed and the draught regulator is fully open. When the fire is well established, add more fuel to give a deep fire bed and adjust the draught regulator to achieve the required level ol heat. Open fires should not be left unattended without a properly fitting fireguard, and rooms should have adequate ventilation.
